If You Just Discovered ‘Black Lighting’, Here’s What You Should Know

2018 is turning out to be the year of Black superheroes…

If you just heard about Black Lightning last night during its premiere, then get ready for what appears to be an explosive season. While we wait for the encore airing this Friday, here’s a few things you should know about the storyline.

About The Series

The series is centered on Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a retired superhero who went by the name of Black Lightning . Jefferson retired from his superhero duties nine years ago after seeing the effects it had on his family. He is now forced to become a vigilante again when the rise of the local gang The One Hundred leads to increased crime and corruption in his community.

While there is no such thing as “Black on Black crime” it will be interesting to see how a Black man fights back against the criminals who are bringing down his community.

The show will also serve as an opportunity to see a Black family portrayed in a positive light–especially as it pertains to showing a committed father and husband in the Black community.  While fictitious, stories such as “Black Lightning” help to change the false narratives of Black families and provides insight on what many men are doing to inspire positive change in their communities.

Accurate representation has been proven to be vital to the cultural and social development of members of any community, and while some may brush these characters off as insignificant in real life, the truth is, Black superheroes matter, especially to the youth of color searching for glimpses of themselves on the television screen.

Black Lightning airs Tuesday nights on The CW at 9pm EST. Check out the trailer below.
